Juneteenth has been a celebration in the black community since I can remember. I can remember growing up as a young black girl on the north side of Minneapolis, attending many Juneteenth celebrations. It’s been a part of our culture since the very beginning. Now it has become something that people of all races can appreciate and enjoy as well.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865 when slaves in Galveston, Texas finally learned that they were free. A whole two years after the emancipation proclamation of January 1, 1863. Community events in Minneapolis as well as all around the Twin Cities are scheduled to celebrate as well as honor black culture in the United States.
